Erika Torkelson - Birth Doula

Birth Doula $1200*

(extended payment plans and sliding fee available on a case by case basis)

I am a DONA trained birth doula. I am also a trained hypo-doula for families using Hypnobabies or Hypnobirthing.  Please contact me for more information or to set up a time to meet!

What's Included:

Initial Meeting - This is a time for us to get to know each other a bit to see if we are a good fit. You are welcome to ask me any questions you need to decide if I am the right doula for you. I'll also ask a few questions to be sure that I'm able to offer you what it is you are looking for in a doula.
Two Prenatal Meetings - These meetings can happen any time really, but often they make the most sense to have between 32 and 34 weeks for the first meeting and between 35 and 37 weeks for the second. We use these meeting to really get to know each other, talk about what your vision for your birth is, go over your birth preferences or help you write your birth preferences .  We may go over some comfort measures and I teach all of the families who are interested Spinning Babies techniques for getting your baby into a good position for birth.  We'll al so spend time talking about your postpartum time and bringing your baby home! I am happy to talk about any topics you would like to cover or feel you need more information about as well.
On-Going Support - I am available to you throughout your pregnancy to answer questions  and talk about any concerns or questthat you may have. I keep myself available 24 hours a day for my clients so if you have a nagging issue at 3:00 in the morning and just need to talk to someone about it I am always happy to talk. I am available by phone, email or text.
Provider Visit - Should you feel that it would be beneficial for me to accompany you to a visit with your provider I will attend one visit with you.
Birth - Once labor begins you will contact me to let me know. I will likely ask that you keep me updated every couple of hours so that I can be most ready to come to you quickly when you decide you need me. Once you reach a point in you labor that you feel you need or want some extra support you will let me know and I will then come to you, be that at your home or at your chosen birth site. I will remain with you throughout your birth and stay anywhere from 1-3 hours after you baby is born to be sure that you're all tucked in, fed, comfortable,  and that breastfeeding has been established (or there is a plan to get it started) if that's your choice.
1-2 Postpartum Visits - I will usually check in with you over the phone within a couple of days of your birth just to be sure that you are doing ok and that you have access to resources for anything you need. If you feel like you would benefit from a visit within a couple of days of your birth I will come for a visit then, otherwise I schedule a visit at home with you 2-3 weeks postpartum. We will use this time to check in, talk about your birth, I talk a little bit about postpartum mood disorders (they effect 1 in 5 women so I think it's a very important topic!), and anything that may have come up since your baby's birth that you have questions about (basic baby care, breastfeeding, baby wearing, cloth diapering, normal newborn behavior, etc.)

Additional Options
Placenta Encapsulation Because I believe so strongly in the benefits of placenta encapsulation, I offer this service discounted rate to all of my doula clients. It is totally optional so if it's not something that you are interested in that's ok, but I think it's a wonderful tool to have in your postpartum toolbox so I make it really easy to say yes!

*It is my sincere wish that every woman who wants a doula have one. If cost is an issue for you and you feel I am the best match for you, please talk with me. I am happy to work out payment plans, arrange for barter, and in some occasional situations work on a sliding fee scale.

"Hiring a doula to attend our first child's birth was something my husband and I talked much about but just weren't sure was "worth the money". As I look back on the day our daughter was born, I can say confidently that hiring Erika Torkelson as our doula was one of the best decisions we made. Although I ended up laboring for over 56 hours, I was able to follow my birth plan and have an unmedicated birth thanks to the support that Erika provided to me. She was by my side through every contraction with a kind word, a reminder to breath, a new position to try, a different strategy for pain management, etc. She came to the birth with an arsenal of experience, suggestions, methods and even some quick-energy snacks to aid in any request I made. Erika helped my husband feel very involved by teaching him some of her techniques and also by encouraging him along the way. Erika met with my husband and I a few times before our daughter's birth and ensured we were all on the same page regarding our birth plan. During my weakest moments in labor, Erika was my advocate making sure I was comfortable at every turn. Thanks to Erika's support, my husband and I are able to look back at the birth of our daughter very fondly. We're also able to look back at that magical day through all the wonderful photos Erika captured. Erika's support did not end with the arrival of our daughter. She met with us a couple more times afterward to ensure we were adjusting to parenthood well and to answer any questions we had. I would recommend Erika to any expectant mother or father. In fact, I'd consider us lucky to have her support at the births of our future children as well."  - Silvia's Mom
